Lateral Survival Thinking

You and a friend are lost in the wilderness, heading towards what you think is a town, and you come to a river.

A rope crosses it, tied to a tree on either side. There aren't any rocks here, but the river is deep, fast, and about fifty meters across.

To make matters worse, neither of you has the strength left to hold on against that current all the way to the other side. Also, there is a large waterfall a hundred meters downstream, so failing means death..

All you have with you is the clothes you are wearing, a pocket knife, and the trees and bushes around you.

How can you get to the other side?

 answer is below.

Lateral Thinking Solution: One possibility is to use the rope to pendulum the two of you across the river. First you use shoe laces or strips of clothing to tie yourselves securely to the rope near the tree it is attached to. Then you cut the rope at the tree, and enter the river. The rope is still tied to the other side, so you won't go over the waterfall, and the current will sweep you in an arc across the water until you are against the other shore, where you can climb out before untying yourselves.
