   Hotels are amongst the most visible and important aspects of a country's infrastructure.Of late, a number of factors like promotion of tourism and rapid industrial progress have given a boost to the industry. And with the growth of the industry, the demand for well-trained quality personnel has grown manifold as well.

   The industry has a lot offer as it makes use of a variety of skills like management, food and beverage service, housekeeping, front office operation, sales and marketing, and accounting. Besides with increasing globalisation, career opportunities in this field are no longer limited to the confines of any one particular country. With hotels establishing extensions abroad, the industry may just be your ticket to a career abroad.


INDUSTRY OVERVIEW


The hospitality industry in India is, today,at a very interesting stage.On one hand, we have three or four well-established hotels with a strong market presence and on the other, an influx of multinational hospitality chains and first time entrants. This situation is, in my opinion, a microcosm of what is happening within the Indian industry, as we approach the end of the first decade in the new millennium, and sets the stage for a period of sustained growth in terms of both professional expertise and standards. The real winners in the long term however,would be companies that will not compromise on the quality of their product or human resources and deliver a world-class hospitality experience.
   In the last four to five years, the number of graduates and hotel management diploma holders vying for positions in the hotel industry has grown in direct proportion to the industry's needs. However, with the tremendous development in the hospitality industry, we are now at a stage where the demand is going to rise exponentially and the need for quality professionals, who are passionate about their role and capable of making a significant contribution, is also going to increase tremendously.


SKILL-SET REQUIRED


We look for passion, a positive attitude, an outgoing personality and a happy, smiling demeanour. Intellectual and technical skills and the potential to develop these are also extremely important. Successful hotel management requires a combination of thoughtfulness and action.We are always in search of people who really like people, who have service ethics at the core of their being and are able to deal confidently with the most important people in our business - our guests.
   Candidates must demonstrate that they have a passion for assisting people, solving their problems, anticipating their needs and exceeding their expectations. Candidates must be people who have the right attitude, determination and motivation,tempered with pragmatism and a realistic ambition.


REMUNERATION


Promotion comes in two forms - job enrichment and job enhancement. Besides, the willingness to accept transfers also accelerates growth as moving laterally in the same function across hotels in India and abroad enhances a person's experience and abilities. Traditionally, people from food and beverage and front office functions become general managers. Today one's merit, willingness, skill to learn and adapt to new roles allows people across functions to be groomed and to take on this responsibility.
